A CENTURY OF

SKILLED WORK

Local 14 has been part of Philadelphia’s working fabric since our founding in 1909. What began as a small group of craftsmen organizing for fair wages has grown into one of the most respected skilled trades locals in the region.

OUR FOUNDING

The International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers has been organizing workers in this trade since 1909. Local 14 was chartered to represent insulators in the greater Philadelphia area, covering workers across Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.

From the beginning, the union’s mission was direct: ensure that the people doing the most technically demanding and physically taxing work in building construction and industrial maintenance were compensated fairly, protected on the job, and treated with dignity by their employers.

BUILDING PHILADELPHIA

Local 14 members have had a hand in constructing and maintaining some of the most significant industrial and commercial infrastructure in the Philadelphia region — from the region’s pharmaceutical corridor to its hospitals, universities, and major commercial developments.

When you enter a major hospital, a university building, or a manufacturing facility in this region, there is a strong chance that Local 14 members installed the insulation systems that make those buildings safe and efficient.

THE UNION'S EVOLUTION

The trade and the union have both changed significantly over the decades. Where early members worked primarily in industrial settings with materials that are now tightly regulated or no longer in use, today’s Local 14 member is a certified technician — trained to work with modern insulation systems, firestopping technology, and environmental abatement under strict safety protocols.

The union has evolved alongside the industry: negotiating stronger safety language into collective bargaining agreements, partnering with the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee to expand and modernize the training curriculum, and advocating at the state and federal level for worker protections.
